Ramen Be Gone

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

You’re probably just like me. You love snowboarding, you think America’s Funniest Videos is the best show on television and you hate paying full price to hit Vermont’s top resorts. Am I right? Oh, everything except the America’s Funniest Videos part. Well, you’ll come around.

But the hating full price part – we’re seeing eye to eye on that.

So I’ve done some sleuthing around on the ‘ol interwebs and discovered some killer deals.

First up: Jay Peak. Their “Steal the Snow” deal runs through January 9, so make haste. From $99 per person/per night you get lodging in Hotel Jay, lift tickets, breakfast and dinner. Call 800-451-4449 to book — all you have to do is show up with your board and beanie. And as always, if you bring your season pass from another mountain, Jay gives honkin’ discounts on lift tickets, every day of the season. Follow @jaypeakdeals on Twitter to stay on top of it all.

SNOWwowIf you have the luxury of skiing midweek, type “Bolton Valley” into your GPS and point it north. Running January 3 – 14, midweek rooms at the Inn at Bolton are $69 per night. You’re probably thinking, “yeah, it’s at some condo 3 miles from the slopes.” Nope. The Inn is slopeside — out the door and on the hill. Considering that a room at the Econo Lodge in Hoboken, NJ is $70 midweek, I’d say you’re getting a good deal on that one. Call 877-9BOLTON to book. What up, Hoboken?!

William Shatner would be proud of this one: Stratton has a bidding-style “name your price” feature on its website, with minimum bids starting at $35 per room per night. YOU tell Stratton how much THEY’RE getting? Totally brill. Well done, Stratton marketing team.

Mad River Glen has a stellar deal if you’re coming up… oh, wait. That’s right.

Sugarbush is keeping the 2.0 crowd happy with its new e-ticket system. As long as you’re riding for 2 days or more, buy your tickets online and save a healthy chunk of scrill.

Apparently Okemo’s got a thing for Thursdays. And they’re serving the internet-savvy with their very attractive, online-only $39 lift tickets, good on these select Thursdays: January 14 & 21; March 18 & 25; and on April 1 & 8 tickets are only $29.

Man, the internets are so awesome.

Looks like you won’t be eating Ramen out of a tupperware container this week, Chief. Follow @RideVermont on Twitter for even more deals as the season progresses.

And hey, just so we’re all on the same page here, watch this video. Tell me that’s not the funniest thing you’re going to see on television all week. See the monkey is upset ’cause the kid gave him an empty bag of chips… nevermind.

best. Monday. ever.

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Score. VT is getting blasted with snow as I type on this lovely Monday afternoon. If you’re already up here – stay in and get some rest, tomorrow’s going to rock. If you’re planning to drive up – be extra careful and don’t forget to strap your powder board in the Yak rack.

Stowe this morning. Even the camera is focusing on the snow, not the ridel.

Jay Peak reports on its Twitter feed that it is “…vomiting snow right now. Up to a foot expected.” Nothing like a pukeload of powder to keep the holiday week flowing.

Weather Underground says Stratton will end up with 4 to 8 inches of total snowfall. The sun should even start poking through the clouds by late morning tomorrow. Bluebird? I do declare.

In other news, Mount Snow is just 48 hours from opening its superpipe Wednesday morning – the very pipe that will host the Dew Tour finals in February. You gotta hand it to Gaitor and Elia and their park crew for getting a pipe open before New Year’s.

And if you’re wondering “what is RideVermont’s favorite photo from this weekend?”, it comes from the Vans Cold Wars rail jam on Saturday at Stratton (see below).

That’s awesome. If that is you in the photo, please email RideVermont at ridevrmnt@gmail.com with some form of proof, we’ve got a special consolation prize for you.

P.S. If anyone has any results, photos or video from Saturday’s Vans Cold Wars rail jam at Stratton, please email us with what ya got.

terrain park Cliff’s Notes

Monday, December 21st, 2009

the slow start to the 2009-2010 snowboard season is behind us, fellow shredders.

cold nights have kept Vermont snowmakers busier than Tiger Woods’ attorney, and ropes are dropping like bad habits. Jay Peak is over 80% open and Sugarbush, known for its “if there’s snow on it, drop the rope” ethos, is 95% open. not too shabby when you consider it was in the 40s and raining just a few weeks ago.

all you freeriders have plenty of terrain to work with this week at every mountain in Vermont.

freestylers: here is your Cliff’s Notes version of what’s happening in the parks in Vermont this week:

STRATTON: Tyrolienne is open with a fresh layout & design. a 10′ box, A-frame box, 15′ battleship rail, 30′ flat box and four jumps are waiting for you. and don’t forget about the Vans Cold Wars Rail Jam on Dec. 26, under the lights on Tyrolienne – a great way to test out the new bindings your mom got you for XMas.

SUGARBUSH: you’ll find a 24′ down box, 24′ down rail, 24′ double kink (double kink? hi ohhhh!) and a 9′ flat box at the base of Lincoln Peak. rumor has it there’s a small, skate-inspired jib playground on Rim Run too.

Killington, Dec. 19.

Killington, Dec. 19.

CARINTHIA at Mount Snow: Carinthia continues to kill it this year with half a dozen parks already open. go-to park Nitro is holding strong with 18 features.

STOWE: Stowe is easing into things with a few small parks open, including the Rail Garden and Midway. P.S. have you played “Find Your Line” on stowe.com yet? you can bust methods off of moguls – watch out for the trumpet on rider’s left, though. that’s right, a trumpet.

KILLINGTON: Mouse Run is open with a handful of features. and i think we can all agree that we’re waiting, boards in hand, for a few big storms so we can get into The Stash. hurry up, snow.

OKEMO: the big news: the AMP Energy Bus on Nor’Easter is now open for the season. if you’ve never experienced the bus… i mean just look at this thing. Miss Bonnie, the prettiest PR lady in VT, tells us the Ross Powers Superpipe is getting absolutely blasted with snowmaking and should open soon.

BOLTON: Bolton is sittin’ pretty with four features in the Jungle Jib park, including a rainbow box, a butter box, a flat-up-flat box, and a down bar rail.

there it is. the VT snowboard season is officially blown open. now get ‘er done.

happy holidays from all us at Ski/Ride Vermont.
