Bolton bluebird

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

Yesterday was far and away my best day of the season. All the ingredients were there: uninterrupted sunshine, temps in the upper 20s, no wind and no lift lines. Icing on the cake: I was introduced to the Wilderness peak at Bolton Valley by terrain parks manager Allison Buttner (stay tuned for an interview with Allison later this week.)

If you’ve never been to Bolton and you’re a glades-lover, you are depraved. Seriously, go there. You can duck into the trees almost anywhere on any trail and find the good stuff — I was stumbling onto fresh powder on every other run, even though there hasn’t been a good dumping in over 2 weeks.

I hope you were able to get out on Saturday. But if not, here’s a batch of photos to rub it in…

No photoshopping here - it was THAT bluebird yesterday.

Even the moon made an appearance. It was all, "sure looks like a nice day to ride down there." The moon can't snowboard, though, on account of its not having any legs.

And the award for best dressed goes to... (I overheard someone ask him if it his hat was made of coyote or fox and he said, "nope. wolf." so it would be wise not to get on this guy's bad side.)

best. Monday. ever.

Score. VT is getting blasted with snow as I type on this lovely Monday afternoon. If you’re already up here – stay in and get some rest, tomorrow’s going to rock. If you’re planning to drive up – be extra careful and don’t forget to strap your powder board in the Yak rack.

Stowe this morning. Even the camera is focusing on the snow, not the ridel.

Jay Peak reports on its Twitter feed that it is “…vomiting snow right now. Up to a foot expected.” Nothing like a pukeload of powder to keep the holiday week flowing.

Weather Underground says Stratton will end up with 4 to 8 inches of total snowfall. The sun should even start poking through the clouds by late morning tomorrow. Bluebird? I do declare.

In other news, Mount Snow is just 48 hours from opening its superpipe Wednesday morning – the very pipe that will host the Dew Tour finals in February. You gotta hand it to Gaitor and Elia and their park crew for getting a pipe open before New Year’s.

And if you’re wondering “what is RideVermont’s favorite photo from this weekend?”, it comes from the Vans Cold Wars rail jam on Saturday at Stratton (see below).

That’s awesome. If that is you in the photo, please email RideVermont at ridevrmnt@gmail.com with some form of proof, we’ve got a special consolation prize for you.

P.S. If anyone has any results, photos or video from Saturday’s Vans Cold Wars rail jam at Stratton, please email us with what ya got.
